Why Motorcycle Body Armor is Important

Body armor is an important item of motorcycle safety equipment that is sometimes overlooked and underappreciated. Helmets are the first item that comes to mind because they protect your head and neck and are therefore the most essential kind of protection. Riding with the appropriate helmet increases your chances of surviving a motorcycle accident, but what about other protective gear?

In the event of an accident, a jacket, gloves, riding pants, and riding suits can all help save your skin, preserve your bones, and prevent serious sprains. Each of these pieces of gear has some form of body armor built in. The most common type of body armor for motorcycle safety gear is high-density foam combined with carbon fiber or Kevlar composite abrasion panels. All main and minor joints with the highest potential for impact during an accident will be protected from impact and abrasion with body armor.

Is Body Armor Effective?

Motorcycle jackets are usually armored at critical impact locations, like the back, shoulders, and elbows. Leather, mesh, a Kevlar hybrid, or a textile that is more suited to all-weather conditions are all possibilities. Internal and external pockets, as well as tightening devices around the neck and wrists, are common bonus features. Armored Pants

Depending on where and in what conditions you ride, armored riding pants can be made of leather or textiles, and both provide protection in the hips, pelvis, legs, and knees. Look for characteristics that best suit your riding style, and then see what you can buy based on your budget.

Motorcycle Boots

It is arguable whether or not having motorcycle boots is necessary for riding, as many riders prefer to ride in their hiking boots. Wearing any boot will provide a reduction in risk of any foot or ankle damage or open wound injuries. However, armored motorcycle boots will lower your risk of an open wound injury even more.

Motorcycle boots are available in a variety of styles. You can go with a boot that has extra abrasion protection around the toe and a steel toe insert for added toe impact protection, or just a decent over the ankle boot that provides ankle support. For when you step in an oily puddle at an intersection, all motorcycle boots should have an oil-resistance sole that can manage a slick surface. Some motorcycle boots come with a string closure that can be tucked inside the boot and secured with a hook-and-loop closure, while others are slip-on.

Elbow and Knee Guards

If you do not want to wear a suit or jacket but still want the protection that armor provides, there are solutions for simple armor. Some companies sell a thin shirt or riding pants with protective armor padding that can be worn beneath regular riding gear. You might already have a pair of riding jeans that you like to ride in but want to wear armored pads underneath them. For those circumstances, these types of protectors are an excellent choice. If you want to wear your elbow and knee pads on the outside, they can be worn over a shirt, jacket, or slacks.

Back/Spine Protector

A back/spine protector may appear to be something that only racers on a track or on a closed course should use, but it does not have to be race-only protection gear, even if it is a standard item for racers. In an accident, back protectors help to reduce soft tissue injuries on the back and sides of the body. Soft tissue injury is related to bruising only, though; it is not connected to a fractured back or shattered vertebrae. Most back protectors limit spine movement and prevent punctures or abrasions. Hip protectors are usually in the form of padded shorts that can be worn under your riding pants for extra protection. They are made to fit snugly around your hips and legs to keep the pads in place when riding a motorcycle.

The Challenge of Riding with a Motorcycle Passenger

Motorcycle passengers are a safety issue because of the nature of motorcycles. They only have two wheels (in most cases), which means they rely heavily on balance. When another grown person is on a bike, it changes everything. Their movement can throw off your balance, and the weight of the bike will be different. This will cause the bike to handle differently, especially if it is a smaller bike.

However more dangerous it may be to have a passenger on a motorcycle is dependent on many variables, but it is possible to greatly reduce the risk of injury by evaluating and mitigating risk. 

• Experienced Rider:

The first thing you want to ensure if you are planning on putting a passenger on a motorcycle with you is that you have experience. Typically, over one year of experience is recommended before letting somebody join you. This is because you’ll get to know your bike and how it handles on the road. It will also give you an opportunity to handle hazards, such as semi-trucks and tar snakes, that are inevitable when riding a motorcycle but require experience to handle correctly. A new rider is not equipped to handle everyday hazards with the added challenge of an extra person’s weight on their bike. 

• Big Bike: 

The weight of the bike and the weight of the person will have something to do with the difficulty of riding “2-up.” If you have a larger bike, it will handle weight differentiation better than a smaller bike. The same goes for the pillion, or passenger. A very heavy passenger is going to be harder to handle. It’s something to consider. Two very slight people on a dual sport may be acceptable. Two people weighing over 200 pounds is not going to be easy. There are other things to consider here as well, such as passenger experience. 

• Signals: 

You may have helmets equipped with microphones that enable you to speak clearly with your passenger. However, equipment can malfunction, and sometimes the wind just doesn’t allow equipment to work properly. In addition to the awesome advantages of today’s technology, you should have some other options for communicating with your passenger. This includes hand signals that let the pilot know the passenger needs to stop, etc. Without hand motions, equipment failure can lead to catastrophic circumstances. 

• Safety Tips: 

A run down of safety tips is also essential for a passenger in order to alleviate some of the things that can ruin a ride. This includes telling the passenger not to put his or her feet down at stops and where to hold on for safety. Getting a good feel for the rider’s experience is good as well. Have they ever ridden on the back of a bike? Do they know not to counter or enhance your movement but rather move with you? These things may be obvious to the experienced rider, but you need to make sure you cover all of the basics just in case. 

• Endorsement: 

It is not just the pilot of a motorcycle who needs to be concerned about safety. The passenger should also do his or her due diligence. Check to make sure the rider has a motorcycle endorsement. Florida requires an endorsement on a driver’s license if the engine for the bike is more than 50 cc.  This pretty much covers all bikes that one would be willing to ride on the road let alone with a passenger. 

• Insurance: 

Lastly, a passenger should make sure that the owner of the bike is carrying insurance. Florida is the only state that does not require insurance to ride a motorcycle on the open road. Make sure your driver has insurance and that they have guest passenger liability. This won’t protect you if it is someone else’s fault, but if the bike you’re riding on is at fault, you’ll have some coverage for injuries. 

• Wear Safety Gear: 

Every motorcycle recommendation should be equipped with a reminder about the importance of safety gear. If you are over 21 years of age, you don’t have to wear a helmet in Florida. However, you must then carry some medical coverage in case of injury. In truth,everyone should be wearing helmets, and that includes passengers. Safety experts also recommend protective boots and clothing that can prevent road rash in some crashes. These injuries can be deadly, but even when they are not, they are painful and lengthy. Safety gear can limit a lot of the risk.

Improve Your Night Vision 

Don’t Be Blinded 

Oncoming headlights can be blinding, and because you are sitting a little higher than most cars, they are even more so. Looking at the farthest right line at the edge of the road on your side of the road is one possibility. This can help keep you traveling the right way and in your lane by reducing the amount of light beaming in your eyes. Do not glance down or away, since it will make it difficult for you to stay in your lane. 

Ride in the Light 

During the dark hours of the day, the lights on your motorcycle only extend so far in front of the bike, limiting your visibility. Your motorcycle has amazing stopping power and can stop in a short distance, but you will need additional stopping distance to avoid any obstructions up ahead. Because you can’t see miles ahead of you at night, limit your speed. It is time to take it slower if you find yourself out-riding your light. 

Use the headlights of other vehicles as an extension of your own. If you are following a car ahead, keep an eye out for debris in the road, potholes, and other hazards that their headlights may reveal. Also keep in mind that cars can straddle road detritus that you can’t, putting your safety at risk. Be prepared to navigate around it or change lanes to entirely escape it, if you spot something. 

Clean Your Visor 

Another thing to remember about your visor is that it must be regularly cleaned. Prevent micro-scratches on your visor using a simple cleaning solution and a cotton or microfiber cloth. Micro-scratches can obscure the visor and distort vision through it over time. The visor should not be scratched with cloth towels. 

Tinted Visors or Glasses for Night 

Riding at night with a dark, tinted visor is not recommended, but there are some alternatives that can help. During low-light hours, such as dusk, a yellow-tinted visor or glasses can be worn. There are also photochromic visors that adjust to light levels throughout the day for individuals who do not want to worry about carrying an extra visor to swap out from day to night. You can also bring an extra pair of clear glasses to wear at night when riding with the visor down. There is no one-size-fits-all solution that will work for every rider, so try a few different things to see what works best for you. 

Prepare for the Elements 

Seeing Through the Fog 

Fog might be more abundant during the lower evening and overnight temperatures. Fog brings condensation, which can coat your windshield, visor, and rear-view mirrors in a film of moisture. This can be inconvenient for your ride because it obstructs your vision. To prevent or reduce fogging, apply a coat of anti-fogging solution to each surface. 

Temperature Variations 

If you live in a location with a lot of temperature swings, you know how important it is to plan ahead. While it is simple to switch off the air conditioning and crank up the heat in a car, you do not have that luxury on a motorcycle. In hot weather, you might want to consider wearing a jacket or suit with a removable thermal liner that can be readily converted to cooler riding clothing when it gets humid. If your daily gloves are not keeping you warm enough, bring along a spare pair of gloves for night riding. Remember that riding while cold affects your ability to stay focused on the road and slows down your body’s reaction time, so be prepared. 

Loss of Traction 

Cooler roads give your tires less traction. Not only could cool, wet roads be a problem, but cool, dry roads might also be a problem. Be aware of your speed and proceed with caution around curves and straightaways.

• Be a Defensive Rider: Imagining you are invisible is one of the most effective ways to keep safe. You can sometimes blend in so perfectly with the traffic that you almost become one with it. Ride defensively and always consider what you can do to keep yourself safe if another motorist fails to notice you. 
• Stay Alert: You should keep your eyes on the horizon and your mirrors at all times. Place your mirrors in such a way that you can see what’s behind you without having to move your head to glance around. 
• Keep Out of Blind Spots: Another person’s or a larger vehicle’s blind spot is one of the worst places to you can be. They can easily merge or change lanes into you, as well as swerve to avoid hitting road debris, resulting in an unnecessary collision. 
• Use Your Signal: Turn signals are a respectful way to indicate to other drivers that you intend to change your direction by making a lane change or turning. The flashing lights can also attract the attention of another motorist while riding at night.
• Increase Driving Distance: When you can’t see clearly in front of your motorcycle, you will need to increase your following distance. While you can stop much faster than most other vehicles on the road, a lot may happen rapidly when riding at night. Adding a few seconds to your reaction time for a potential problem will far outweigh being a few minutes late due to traffic or the need to ride slower.
• Turning/ Cornering Changes: Separating the braking and turning actions is one approach to make cornering easier. Before you commit to a turn, brake the most (if not all). This gives your tires the most traction and gives you the most stability for each motion. 
• Riding in Thirds: Each lane can be divided into three sections (left, center, and right), and they are all important, regardless of the time of day. To keep safe and avoid anything in the road, use them as needed. Each segment has advantages and disadvantages in terms of other drivers, debris, passing, and so on. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to which segment you should ride in. Stay safe and visible at all times. 

Riding at night can introduce you to a whole new world. You can ride the same length of road during the day for years, but a nighttime ride can entirely change your perspective. As the scenery changes, so do the threats. Small changes in your riding clothing, minor additions to your motorcycle, and adjustments to your riding behavior can help you stay safe while taking in the sights.

What to Pack 

Remember that you have to carry everything with you on your bike. So even though you want to be prepared for all possible outcomes, try not to overpack. The more weight you add to your bike, the less efficient your mileage will be and the heavier your bike will handle. However, there are some necessities for a longer trip that you should always make room for. 

Personal Gear 

• ATGATT: Motorcycle enthusiasts have a saying regarding the gear you should wear on your person for a ride – all the gear, all the time (or ATGATT). You could be riding through a range of climates, weather, and times of day, so you should layer properly and be prepared to change when needed. Invest in a set or two of good base layers for under your gear to help you adjust to rapid temperature changes. Synthetics are the best choice, as they wick away sweat and are lighter than cotton. 
• Rain Gear: This is one thing that it is always better to have than not. If you get stuck in a downpour without it, you will regret it, especially if you packed light and do not have many options for a change of outfit. 
• Personal Items and ID: Have your wallet and cellphone on your person or easily accessible on your bike from your riding position. You should also try to keep a small amount of cash with you for tolls or cash-only purchases. And of course, keep your license, registration, and insurance information handy and safe from loss or damage, in case you get pulled over or get into an accident. 
• Eyewear: Since you may be travelling through different times of day, you may consider bringing two different visors or goggles, a dark, tinted one for bright sun and a clear one for night. If you wear corrective eyewear for riding, consider carrying a spare pair of contacts or glasses with you. 
• Sunscreen: Being out in the elements all day can spell sunburn. Apply and pack sunscreen for your journey, as well as some lip balm with SPF. This can also help with windburn. 
• Earplugs: During a shorter commute, noise from your ride may not bother you. But if you are riding for hours on end, earplugs can help reduce wind noise and helmet static and can protect your hearing and prevent headaches. 
• Toiletries: Even if you don’t plan to stay somewhere overnight or you are counting on supplies at where you are staying, it is a good idea to carry some toiletries and emergency items, just in case your ride doesn’t go according to plan. In addition to soap, toothbrush and paste, deodorant, and feminine sanitary items, pack things like a first aid kit, pain and allergy medications, and bug repellent. 

Other Gear 

• Tools: Carry tools for emergencies and bike maintenance. Make sure your kit includes a crescent wrench, pliers, socket set, flashlight, screwdriver, Allen wrenches, bungee cords, a tire repair kit, and a set of jumper cables. Spare parts, like wire, cable ties, replacement bulbs, duct tape, cotter pins, and fuses, also belong in your kit. 
• Fuel: Extra fuel can be a lifesaver if you are riding in remote areas where gas stations are infrequent. 
• Hydration Pack: A water bottle will do the trick, but a hydration pack is more convenient and doesn’t require you to take your hands off the bike or eyes off the road to drink. 
• Snacks: You may have a long way to ride between meals. Pack some nutrient-dense snacks to keep your energy levels up. 
• Camping Equipment: If there is any chance you could end up camping on your journey, pack the essentials, such as a light source, batteries, fire starter, toilet paper, sleeping bag and pad, tent, small camp stove, eating utensils, and a knife. 

Safety Tips 

Last but not least, it is important that you stay safe out there and keep your wits about you. Too many mistakes or lack of attention can quickly turn a great trip with fond memories into a headache. Keep these safety tips in mind. 

For You 

• Stay Well-Rested: Get proper sleep each night. Caffeine is not a good substitute for actual rest. If you are tired, pull over. 
• Eat Well: Eat a solid, balanced meal before and after your ride. Eat snacks and hydrate frequently throughout the day. A breakfast high in protein and fiber will give you long-lasting energy without a crash to help you stay alert and motivated during the day. 
• Get an Early Start: Leave yourself plenty of time to coverage you planned mileage for the day. An added benefit of starting early is you can beat heavy morning traffic and the heat of midday. 
• Take Frequent Breaks: Much like at work, your brain will function better if you take breaks every hour. Try to stop regularly to stretch, eat, or rehydrate. This is also a good opportunity to take in the scenery and enjoy some sights on your trip. Move your body in ways that will counteract all the sitting and will energize you. 
• Be Flexible: When you are riding in an unfamiliar place, you can’t plan for everything. Traffic and weather can change, so have a contingency plan if you have to break your schedule. 

For Your Bike 

• Check Your Fluids: Your bike needs to stay hydrated too! When you stop for breaks, check your oil and fuel levels and make sure there are no leaks. 
• Bring a Spare Key: The worst time to lose your keys is on a long trip, so always bring an extra set. Store it in a secure location so no one can steal it. 
• Inspect You Bike Each Morning: Before you set out, check your tires, controls, electrics and lights, fluids, chassis, and stands and make repairs as necessary. 
• Know Your Fuel Range: Even if your map shows you will be riding through a town, don’t assume it has gas. Be aware of how many miles you can ride on one tank of gas and how to calculate your miles per gallon. You don’t want to end up stranded in the middle of nowhere without cell service

Obstacles to Motorcycle Riding at Night 

When visibility is limited, riding becomes more dangerous. There are a few things to keep in mind when riding at night: 

• Intoxicated Drivers: Aside from the obvious issues of low visibility, riding at night brings additional risks from drunk drivers. Other drivers are more likely to have had a few drinks before driving. Between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. is the riskiest time for fatal motorcycle accidents to happen. 
• Hidden Obstacles: Aside from other vehicles on the road, the road gets more dangerous as darkness approaches, owing to obstructions and debris in the road, potholes of all sizes, loose gravel, manholes, and many other things that become less visible as dusk approaches. They become more difficult to steer around, as well. While you may be able to see something on the road, moving in your lane of travel can put you in danger of colliding with something you did not notice hiding in the shadows. 
• Animals: A deer in the headlights, as the phrase goes, is a realistic depiction of animals that freeze under pressure when looking into your headlights. Many prey and scavenging animals come out at night to avoid active predators during the day and/or because they are naturally nocturnal. Fortunately, most animal eyes will light up and alert you to their existence if you come across one late at night, just in time to avoid them on the road. 
• Limited Visibility: Statistics show that a bigger proportion or motorcycle fatalities happen during the evening hours, regardless of the season and weather conditions. It seems clear that the lack of good visibility, whether it is the ability to see or be seen, is the likely cause of such accidents. 

Make Yourself Visible 

If poor visibility is a major factor in nighttime motorcycle accidents and fatalities, there are various things you can do to improve visibility and make evening motorcycle riding safer. Here are a few things you can do to improve nighttime riding safety: 

High Visibility Clothing/Gear: Take advantage of the fact that your body is entirely visible to other drivers by wearing apparel that is easily seen in low light levels at night. Motorcyclists who wear high-visibility or fluorescent clothes are much less likely to be involved in a motorcycle accident. 

Wearing vivid hues like neon yellow, green, orange, or even white will make you more visible than if you are dressed entirely in black. Most essentially, make sure your motorcycle clothing contains retro-reflective panels that shine when exposed to light from your headlights, as this will be the most noticeable part of you when riding. 

You can buy a neon industrial safety vest, which is typically worn by construction workers, if you do not want to invest in hi-viz gear or you do not think you will need or wear it often. Choose a vest that is neon yellow or orange, and make sure it has reflective panels! 

Reflective Tape & Decals: For extra visibility, make your motorcycle and/or your gear more visible by using retro-reflective tape that will attract other drivers’ attention. To spruce up your gear, you can buy a roll of tape in almost any color you can think of. Use your imagination while placing the tape; you can put it along the edge of your bike, on your forks, along with your panniers and saddlebags, or even on the lip of your wheel rims, if you want to go all out. For those who wish to add more graphics to their motorcycles, armor, or helmet, reflective decals are also available. 

Lighting Options: When it comes to lighting on your motorcycle, there are plentiful options available. 

• LED Lights: Although standard incandescent bulbs are bright, upgrading to an LED light bulb will improve your visibility to other drivers and help you to see farther and better at night. LED lights can produce greater light with less power from the motorcycle and without the additional heat that a higher wattage incandescent bulb produces. Just be sure your motorcycle flasher can compensate for the lower resistance caused by adding or replacing bulbs with LEDs. To compensate for the change in bulbs, you may need to replace your motorcycle’s flasher with an electronic flasher rather than a resistance flasher. 
• Brake Light Flashers: By installing a flasher, you may replace or enhance your brake lighting by making your bulb flash multiple times when the brakes are used. Rather than having a continuous light, it will flash a few times to attract the attention of the motorist behind you before remaining illuminated. 
• Headlight Modulator: By pulsing your low beam headlights, a headlight modulating kit can attract the attention of oncoming motorists. With so many new cars equipped with daytime running lights, your headlight can get hidden in a sea of them at any time of day. A pulsing light cuts through the multitude of lights, giving you the extra focus you need to stay safe. Although some drivers may find it distracting, it simply demonstrates that it is working — you are being noticed! 
• Auxiliary Lights: Aside from replacing the OEM bulbs with LED replacements, there are a plethora of custom lighting solutions for increased visibility on your motorcycle. The style of lighting you should use is determined by the goal you are attempting to achieve.
